Saviour King School, Kibera, Teachers Go for a Week-long Trip to Watamu
December school holidays usher in a different kind of thrill for teachers and staff at Saviour King School, Kibera. It is a time to leave the city for a few days and unwind on the quiet shore of the Indian Ocean.
One of the highlights of this year’s trip was dancing to Kenyan gospel music along the shore. Vernacular music played from a speaker as we danced from one end of the sandy coastline to the other. Some tourists lounging on sun beds outside the villas or playing football on the beach joined us.
Another memorable moment was a five-minute boat ride to Love Island, a natural sand bank that forms in a heart shape when the tide changes. Some of us climbed a lookout hill to catch a glimpse of the heart-shaped island, while others sat in the shallow, warm waters to bask in the evening sun. The walk back to the shore during the low tide sealed the experience as one to always remember Watamu by.
